Frequently Asked Questions

Hispanic Heritage Month

The Diversity and Inclusion team at our office recently decided that we needed to implement more cultural celebrations into the workplace. They figured that this would be a great way to create a more positive work culture and bring everyone together.

So they made a list of all of the important dates that we could celebrate. One of the upcoming celebrations of culture they began planning for is Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place each year from September 15th until October 15th.

Now you may be wondering, why does Hispanic Heritage Month take place across two different months? Well, the dates for Hispanic Heritage Month were purposefully chosen. The start date of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15th, was chosen because it is the independence anniversary for a large number of Hispanic countries in Latin America, such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Two other Hispanic countries, Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, which fall within the 30-day period of Hispanic Heritage Month.

So what is Hispanic Heritage Month? Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates Hispanic American Latino People, their culture, their history, their heritage, and their wonderful contributions to American society, history, and culture.

Hispanic American Culture

Hispanic American culture has played an impactful role in many areas of American pop culture. This is just one of the many reasons why celebrating Hispanic American culture is so important.

Before getting into the significance of Hispanic American culture, let’s go over the Hispanic American definition. A Hispanic American is someone living in America who identifies with a Hispanic heritage. Someone of Hispanic heritage is a descendant of a Spanish-speaking country. This could be a country in Latin America, Spain, or another Hispanic country. Though Brazil isn’t a Spanish-speaking country, Brazilian Americans are still Latinos, therefore they fall under the category of Hispanic Americans. It's important to note that people of Latino heritage are Hispanic, but not all Hispanic people have Latino heritage.

Countries that are included in Hispanic Heritage Month are:

  • Argentina
  • Bolivia
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • Cuba
  • Dominican Republic
  • Ecuador
  • El Salvador
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Guatemala
  • Honduras
  • Mexico
  • Nicaragua
  • Panama
  • Paraguay
  • Peru
  • Puerto Rico
  • Spain
  • Uruguay
  • Venezuela
  • Brazil
  • Haiti

Since there are so many countries included in Hispanic heritage, there are a large number of Americans that identify with Hispanic heritage. This is why Hispanic culture has become such a large part of American countries. There are a number of famous Hispanic Americans who have made amazing contributions to American culture and history. We’ll discuss all of the wonderful elements of Hispanic American culture below, but first, let’s get into how you can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in your workplace!
